In Third Person’s E3 2017 Best of Show

E3 2017 is in the books. Overall, I thought the show was just okay. Not as many megatons as I was hoping for, but there were certainly a number of bright spots for all involved. In no particular order, here are my highlights from this year’s E3. What stood out to you?

E3 2017 Musings

Xbox One X name and pricing

Formerly known as Project Scorpio, the new name for Microsoft’s new console only adds more confusion to their already confusing naming conventions. While the added horsepower and promise of 4K gaming seem cool, I’m definitely not ready to pay $500 for that privilege. Will hold off on upgrading my Xbox One until Microsoft is able to justify the investment.

A Look Back at NBA Street

With the relatively recent release of NBA Playgrounds, the name NBA Street has been thrown around a lot as a point of comparison. At first, I was hopeful that Saber Interactive would be reviving a style of arcade basketball that is long overdue for a return. Instead, I was disappointed to see that the comparisons were way off base. NBA Playgrounds is much closer in nature to NBA Jam than EA’s brilliant baller. Using NBA Jam as a template is fine, though it makes me long for NBA Street‘s triumphant return.

What Happened to Advance Wars?

Years before I knew what Fire Emblem was, I was a die-hard Advance Wars fan. Upon its original release on the Gameboy Advance in 2001, it opened my eyes to the wonderful world of turn-based strategy. Beyond being my first foray, it’s still one of my favourites.

The series would get three more sequels before Nintendo quietly stopped supporting the series in 2008. Meanwhile, its sibling game Fire Emblem has taken off to become a marquee Nintendo franchise. What happened to Advance Wars? And what can be done to bring it back?

Hori’s Nintendo Switch Headset Could Be a Sign of Continued Dark Times for Nintendo’s Online Experience

Nintendo has been riding high off of the success of the Switch in recent months. While the system isn’t perfect, it certainly proved to be a step in the right direction in most regards. However, the console’s online infrastructure has been largely nonexistent, as Nintendo has said it will roll out in full alongside of a phone app. Well, if Hori’s headset and adapter combo is any indication, online communication is still going to suck on a Nintendo platform.

Gaming Chair Get!

For years, I have punished my body by sitting on a worn out office chair when I game. The butt cushion flattened out years ago, as did the additional cushion I bought as a stopgap fix.

My cheap and stubborn self probably would have stuck with that crappy chair forever. Thankfully, my wife recently gifted me this awesome gaming chair. It’s a sexy-looking chair with great cushioning and arm rests that flip up for when I need extra elbow room for fighting games. Thank you love!

I know that this style of gaming chair is hot right now, but whatever you’re sitting on when you game, make sure it’s comfortable! For all the time you spend sitting down in front of a television, you should take care of your body and feel good while you’re at it.

In Third Person is Now on Facebook!

in-third-person-facebookIn Third Person is now on Facebook!

Admittedly, this move was not originally part of the master plan. However, in order to stream on Facebook, it has to be done through a fan page. Thus, now it exists.

Hopefully, Facebook will get to a point where I could leverage restream.io or Elgato’s in-app solution for streaming to Facebook and other channels at once. For now, I’ll run a few Facebook-only streams and feature some site content there as well.

Not sure where this will go, but hoping you’ll join me on this new venture into Facebook!

Pokemon Go Player’s Guide to Toronto: Vaughan Mills Mall

On November 4th, 2004, Vaughan Mills Mall opened its doors to the public. Located just across the street from Canada’s Wonderland, this shopping centre features hundreds of stores, a Legoland park and even a bowling alley. It’s a great place for shopping, but how is the Pokemon Go scene over there?

Pokemon Go Player’s Guide to Toronto: Pearson International Airport

Toronto Pearson International Airport is gateway to the city. Thousands of people fly in every day from the world over. If you’re from outside of North America, the urge might be high to pull out Pokemon Go and catch a Tauros before you even leave the airport. Well, it might technically be possible, but don’t hold your breath.

Pokemon Go Player’s Guide to Toronto: Queen’s Park

Opened in 1860, Queen’s Park was named after Queen Victoria. This park in the city is home to the Ontario Legislative Assembly, as well as the University of Toronto. Even if you’re not a student or a member of the government, you’ll want to visit the grounds to check out all of the statues and play some Pokemon Go.
