The Long Road to Redemption for Street Fighter X Tekken

I’ll never forget my first few hours at Toryuken, Toronto’s most recent major fighting game tournament. Scrambling for someone to partner with me for Street Fighter X Tekken, I was repeatedly rejected by dozens of players, all of whom claimed to not play the game. Inside the main room, not a single station was running the game. As the tournament was nearing its start time, one of the tournament organizers got on the mic and asked the community if it was alright if they set up a Street Fighter X Tekken station, and the crowd roared with boos. Though I’d seen a number of negative comments about the game by players in blogs, and message boards, seeing the hate manifest in that way made the sentiment really hit home for me.

Players have had no shortage of reasons to dislike this game, from its on-disc DLC, to the inclusion of the controversial gem system, to its garbled mess of gameplay systems, one game-breaking glitch, and then some. Starting now, however, Capcom is hoping to take steps to reinvigorate this under-performing title.

How Capcom Can Fix Street Fighter X Tekken

Street Fighter X Tekken is in trouble. The game has gone through PR hell over the controversial gem system and the on-disc DLC debacle. The game is off to a slow start in terms of sales. The game isn’t very popular in tournaments, as it routinely draws in less competitors and less viewers than Street Fighter IV or Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Maybe the most damning strike against it is the harsh criticism and feedback the game gets from disappointed fighting game players. Personally, I’ve had a hard time taking this game seriously since Capcom introduced the ridiculously overpowered assist gems and the game-breaking Rolento glitch.

The game is losing steam fast on all fronts. While Street Fighter IV and Marvel vs. Capcom 3 have maintained a loyal and steady player base over the last few years, Street Fighter X Tekken is in danger of falling off the map completely in a matter of months. Even though I like the core of the Street Fighter X Tekken experience, I’m on the brink of letting this game go to play other games. What can Capcom do to save this game from oblivion? Here’s a few of my suggestions.

Coming Soon – Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition Version 2012

There was a moment that occurred at T12: Toronto Fighting Game Championships that still makes me chuckle. This moment happened very early on in the Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition team tournament. On the big screen, two competitors both picked Yun, which made the entire crowd boo mercilessly.

If you haven’t been following the latest news when it comes to Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, I don’t blame you for not seeing the humour in it. However, serious Street Fighter IV players have been crying foul about Arcade Edition’s character balance since the release of the game. Yun and Yang in particular stand out as being considerably stronger than the rest of the cast, though a number of characters received some weird and unnecessary balance changes that made a lot of people angry. Although Capcom has admitted to intentionally making the game unbalanced, this proved to be a bad decision. Ultimately, Yoshinori Ono, the main producer behind the Street Fighter IV series, apologized to the community at EVO 2011 and announced that he’d make things right with Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition Version 2012, set for release on December 13.

Is Mega Man Dead?

The Blue Bomber will always be one of gaming’s most iconic characters. It’s hard not to be when your legacy includes over 50 games across 8 different series’ and when one of those games is Mega Man 2, which is one of my all-time favourites. However, the outlook for Mega Man has looked grim since the release of Mega Man 10 last March. Is it possible that Mega Man is dead? I hope not, but here’s a few indications that it might already be too late.

Capcom Unveils New Street Fighter X Tekken 3 Trailer

 

Yesterday, Capcom lifted its embargo on the media coverage done for Captivate 2011, which is Capcom’s big press event used to promote its upcoming games. To be honest, I didn’t really care for anything Capcom presented. Sure, Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition news is nice, but nothing at that event got me genuinely excited for Capcom’s lineup. Well, almost nothing.

Game Music I Love: Mega Man 2

In Japan, Megaman is known as Rockman. He wasn’t named after rocks you would find on the ground. He was named after rock music. Other characters in the series have rock music inspired names, such as Roll (get it? Rock and Roll?), Bass and his sidekick dog, Treble.

At the time, the developers of Megaman 2 wanted to make a rocking soudtrack. Unfortunately, the technology wasn’t around in the early 1980s to put the sounds of real instruments. Instead, they composed one of the most rocking video game soundtracks ever using 8-bit sounds. As a youngster, I had no idea that was the creative vision behind the music. I just thought it was awesome.

Street Fighter IV on iPhone Makes Me Eat My Words

“…like the thought of eating a steak topped with ice cream, the recently announced Street Fighter IV iPhone port has made me throw up in my mouth just a little bit. I can’t imagine this being anything but an absolute nightmare to play.” – Me.

Up until the recent release of Street Fighter IV on the iPhone, I expected nothing less than garbage from this mobile port. In my previous post, I provided a bunch of reasons to support my initial feelings towards the final product. But then, the positive word-of-mouth online began to bubble. As a Street Fighter IV junkie, this was enough to push me over the edge and give this $10 app a shot. To my surprise, Street Fighter IV on the iPhone does very well considering the platform its on, providing players with a fun fighting game that controls well enough.

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: I Take It For A Ride

A few weeks ago, I vented my thoughts on the possibility of me purchasing Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars. I was interested in the game, but maybe not enough for me to buy it. However, it was also an opportunity as a core Wii owner to show the world that I will buy hardcore games if companies put them out on the platform. This moral dilemma also hit me shortly before I lost my job. With all of the things stacked against it, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom seemed out of my grasp for the time being.
