This stream was not part of the original plan. However, with a bunch of new equipment in need of testing, I decided to hop on in the middle of the night and play some Fantasy Strike! I mess around with Argagarg and DeGrey, while also playing a few online matches with Grave and Rook. With 2020 officially upon us, now is a great time to start fresh! We have a bunch of new items making their debut in the game room, including three new Pokemon plushies, art from Paris, the debut issue of a popular X-Men hero, and more!
My 2019 Game of the Year
For the better half of 2019, the internal debate of what my game of the year would be raged on. It came down to two titles. One was a game that made some bold moves but didn’t quite stick the landing on everything it had to offer. The other was a tighter package overall, but was far less ambitious.
How do I rationalize between the two? There’s no right answer, as both games are fantastic. In this case, I looked past that conflict and dug deep into my soul for an answer. When I was in the thick of it, which game drew the largest emotional response from me? And when I look back at 2019, what’s the game that I’ll remember the most fondly?
Going through this process gave the slight edge to one of the two. My 2019 game of the year is…
10 Years of In Third Person: Why I Keep Writing
In an era of where the conversation about gaming is mostly happening in video, live streaming, podcasting, and social media, the practice of writing about video games is in a weird spot. Though there are no shortage of writers and there will always be an audience seeking gaming-related content in this format, it feels like this medium has shrunk into a niche-of-a-niche. The shift appears so dramatic that the ceiling for success seems much lower as a writer than seemingly any other form of content creator.
With the way things are, it’s impossible for a video game writer to build the audience, revenue, or notoriety approaching anything near Ninja’s level. I love Giant Bomb and Kinda Funny – most of whom started out as writers – but the majority of their success comes from podcasts, videos, and live streams. There are Instagram accounts that have generated six-figure audiences by only posting Fortnite memes. I can see even this reality in my own work, as my tiny Twitch channel generates more money than my blog on a monthly basis with just a fraction of the traffic.
The reality is that creators and their audiences generally prefer to consume their gaming content in those other formats. With the inherent barriers that come with reading and writing versus watching and listening, I feel like writing is always going to get the short end of the stick.
Having said all that, where does that put me, as someone whose been writing for a decade?

As of now, being famous enough to warrant a spot on a convention panel isn’t a goal of mine. Writing and streaming is something I do as a passion project. But if this journey somehow took me up on stage in front of an audience, here are some things I’d be interested in discussing!

“Would you make any droids other than R2D2?”
Having watched an expert discuss the particulars of building R2D2 droids for 45 minutes, I was curious in whether he had any ambitions of applying his incredible skills towards different types of robots. While I was expecting a simple yes or no response, his answer floored me.
Don’t remember the exact words, but the sentiment was clear. Not only did he have zero interest in making other kinds of robots, but he was so fully invested in making R2D2 droids that the idea of shifting his talents to anything other than that was ludicrous. Even without any ambitions of creating robots of my own, it’s these types of moments that make it a pleasure for me to sit in on a panel about virtually anything at conventions.

My first convention experience was a bumpy ride. Not fully understanding how everything worked, I squandered too much of my time wandering aimlessly. Though I’ve got convention planning down to a science nowadays, I still regret for all of the things I missed during that first Fan Expo Canada that I attended.
