Super Mario Maker Design Diary: Tight Squeeze

Going into Super Mario Maker, did you have a plan? A grandiose level design idea that you scribbled in a notebook as a child that been patiently waiting to burst off of the page and into the game? Can’t say I did. After completing the tutorial, I found myself at a loss. What the heck do I do now?

Street Fighter V Beta Impressions Part 4: Cammy

Cammy is one of the most popular characters in the Street Fighter roster. Part of that comes being an attractive character who inexplicably chooses to fight in a one-piece bathing suit. To each, their own, I guess. Outfit aside, she’s also been a fun character to play as, even in games where she wasn’t good.

That certainly wasn’t the case for her in Street Fighter IV. From instant divekicks, to dizzying Sako combos, to unblockable setups, Cammy was a top-tier monster for many years thanks to weapons that kind of went against the spirit of the game. It would ultimately take a core change to how all characters wake-up from a knockdown to cool her off just a touch. How do you now bring her into the Street Fighter V fold without nerfing the character into oblivion? Capcom has some interesting solutions that conundrum.

Thoughts on the Upcoming Release of Project X Zone 2

I wanted to like the original Project X Zone much more than I actually did. Rife with all of the characters I would expect from Capcom, Bandai Namco and Sega, and a thick serving of fan service, the actual experience of playing the game was hugely disappointing. Save for a flashy combat system that had a smidgen more depth than meets the eye, it was a piss poor attempt at a turn-based strategy game. Featuring a stupid story filled with anime cliches and gameplay that was completely devoid of strategy, this was nothing more than 40 hours of mercilessly smashing hapless baddies ad nauseam.

To my surprise, a sequel is in the works. To my disappointment, it seems as though little has been learned from the first game.

Street Fighter V Beta Impressions Part 3: Ryu

Ryu is widely recognized as not only the face of Street Fighter, but as the face for the entire genre of fighting games. However, he serves a much greater purpose as the standard character within the Street Fighter games he appears in. At his best, he has all of the tools a newcomer would need to get an overall feel for the game before moving onto different characters. That said, if you choose to stick with the iconic martial artist, you should be able to hold your own against anyone else in the cast. Does he continue to fill that role in Street Fighter V?

Fan Expo Canada 2015 Recap

Fan Expo 2015Steff and I were just two of the over 127,000 people converged at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre this year for Fan Expo Canada 2015. This year was our fifth consecutive year going and it was a good show. Definitely not my favourite Fan Expo, but one that was certainly worthwhile that kept me entertained throughout. Lots of stories and pictures to share with you, so let’s just get into it!

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Team Deconstruction

Imagine playing a game of Street Fighter where in the middle of the match, you break Ryu’s wrist and he can no longer throw fireballs. This would instantly change the dynamic of the match, as Ryu can no longer keep you at a distance with projectiles. While I’m not actively campaigning for breaking bones to be a feature in the next Street Fighter game, the concept of losing abilities as a fight is happening is a fascinating one. You can already experience this concept in action by playing Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

Gaming in Montreal

Not too long ago, Steff and I packed our bags and boarded a train to Montreal for a weekend getaway. Though I was sad that our trip was scheduled at the same time as the Street Fighter V beta, I was excited to experience a part of Canada that I haven’t been to since I was a toddler. While we certainly had a wonderful time exploring the city, there was a surprising amount of gaming to be had that weekend.
