Toronto Top Tiers – organizers behind T12, and Toryuken – are back! A few days ago, they announced the that they will be hosting T13, Toronto’s second major fighting game tournament of 2012; set to take place in October. This year, they’re planning on running 13(!) different games, which would make it the biggest tournament lineup I’ve ever seen. Click through for the full list of games, and some of my initial thoughts!

Fan Expo 2012: Quick Notes

Fan Expo is in the books. It was an eventful one for Steff, and I. Here’s some notes from the show!
The Walking Dead Episode 2: Starved for Help Review

Episode 2 of The Walking Dead video game series picks up three months after the events of the first. Having found temporary solace in a run-down motel, Lee and his group of survivors find themselves facing off against a new threat: hunger. With tensions running high, and supplies running low, a pair of potential guardian angels appear. In exchange for some fuel, this duo of survivors are willing to provide your group with shelter, and rations from their supposedly large supply. Could this be too good to be true?
I’m Going to Fan Expo 2012
![]()
Canada’s ComicCon North begins this week in Toronto! For the third year in a row, Steff and I have tickets to partake in all four days of Fan Expo. Some of the things I’m excited to see/do at the show include:
– Levar Burton. Reading Rainbow for the win! Also, Star Trek.
– ZombiU will be there. Not too hyped about that game, but its presence means the WiiU should be there in some form.
– Buy all sorts of nerdy stuff
– Enjoy the sight of mostly well-done cosplay
– Be one with my fellow nerds
Though I have yet to figure out how I’m going to document our adventures, I’ll think of something. Also, content will continue as scheduled, so don’t worry about a dip in stuff to read.
Not sure if it’s too late to buy tickets, but you can learn more at the Fan Expo Canada website. If you’re coming out, maybe I’ll see you there this weekend!
Universal Fighting Game Guide: Meter Management

Back in the old days of fighting games, you only had to worry about one meter: the life meter. As long as that meter didn’t run out, you were golden. However, as the genre progressed, so to did the number of meters you were required to manage. Today, almost every fighting game has some sort of super/EX/resource meter that grants you additional moves at the cost of the resources in your meter. In this edition of the Universal Fighting Game Guide, we’re going to cover resource meters and how to leverage them to your advantage.
Check Out My Persona 4 Arena Review on Splitkick.com

Arc System Works, and Atlus are poised to take the fighting game community by storm with their fighting game spin-off of the Shin Megami Tensei: Persona franchise. Persona 4 Arena has already built up a ton of buzz in the community, and it would not surprise me in the least to see this game become a tournament staple over the next few months.
As someone who has 0 interest in the RPG, and as someone who has a history of sucking at Arc System Works’ previous fighting game efforts, I approached Persona 4 Arena with a bit of caution. Having just reviewed it for Splitkick, it’s good to know first-hand that my concerns did not come to fruition. If you want to read my full review for it, head over to Splitkick and check it out now!
Coming Soon: The Nintendo 3DS XL

In just a few days, Nintendo is aiming to make a big splash in the North American portable handheld space with their super-sized Nintendo 3DS redesign. This new iteration features a screen that’s 90% bigger than the original, a sleeker design, and longer battery life. I want one really bad, but I’m having a hard time justifying the purchase of another 3DS when I bought the original at launch for $250, I haven’t played it much since, and the size increase kills its portability for me. Still, old habits die hard, and the urge to have the latest Nintendo hardware in my hands is strong.
Will you be picking up a Nintendo 3DS XL? Let’s discuss in the comments!
Answering Questions About the Competitive Fighting Game Community

Over the past few days, Mike R and I have been discussing a number of things relating to the fighting game community. As a means of bringing some of these conversations to the forefront, he’s provided me with some questions that I’ll answer in this post. Read through for some insight regarding the FGC!
The Curious Case of Persona 4 Arena Reviews

Currently, I’m in the midst of reviewing Persona 4 Arena for Splitkick. Yes, I did end up caving, which should a surprise to no one. Though I have a clear idea of where I want to go with my review, I wanted to see how others approached reviewing this RPG/fighting game mash-up.
While the general consensus is positive, reviewers are coming at this game from wildly different perspectives. Sites like Shoryuken, and 1Up are putting most of their emphasis on the fighting game aspect of it, while others like Giant Bomb, and Joystiq are focused on how this progresses the franchise’s lore.
Bulletstorm Review

Toting an electric whip, a mean “Sparta” kick, and a potty mouth that would make Howard Stern blush, style is the name of the game in Bulletstorm. Taking heavy cues from Devil May Cry, you’re constantly encouraged, and rewarded for creatively dispatching your foes. In one minute, you could be lassoing enemies towards you, kicking them in the air, and shooting them in slow motion as they fly away. In the next, you could be steering sniper bullets around obstacles to hit enemies in the butt – a 50-point feat that the game aptly calls “Rear Entry”.
Though style is at the forefront of the experience, there’s more to Bulletstorm than its overboard machismo. In fact, it’s this excess swagger that’s gotten everyone in this mess in the first place.
