Fight Night Champion for iPhone Review

EA’s iPhone offerings have been awesome of late. Though I’ve been reluctant to buy NBA Jam and Dead Space 2 on the current generation of consoles for $60, I’ve had no problem buying NBA Jam and Dead Space on the iPhone for a fraction of the cost. Both of those games were great examples of taking home gaming experience and translating it into a mobile platform.

I was hoping that Fight Night Champion would follow suit. I love the series, but a game-breaking glitch I ran into with Fight Night Round 4 makes me reluctant to pick up Champion on console. However, I have no problem giving the iPhone game a shot at $5. Is this iPhone port a knock out?

In Third Person’s Top 5 Favourite DS Games

With the Nintendo 3DS set to hit North America in a matter of days, it’s time to close the books on the Nintendo system that could. Who knew that the ugly and under-powered Nintendo DS would end up becoming one of the best-selling systems of all-time? Who knew the device would actually usher in a new era of casual gaming?

Though I’ll confess to not having played my DS in a very long time, I bought a ton of games for it during its hey day and had a lot of great memories with it. Before moving into the next era of handheld gaming, I thought I’d close things out by listing off my top 5 favourite Nintendo DS games.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Patch Nerfs Sentinel and Makes Yesterday’s Post Irrelevant*

*Not fully irrelevant, but almost

Yesterday, Capcom released a patch for Marvel vs. Capcom 3, which they said would activate Event Mode within the game. What they didn’t tell us was that the patch included a number of balance changes and bug fixes as well.

While most of the changes will be glossed over, the news of Sentinel being nerfed has made quite the splash within the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 community.

How-To Beat Sentinel in Marvel vs. Capcom 3

Sentinel is arguably the most divisive character in the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 roster. Though he’s wildly popular nowadays, many people consider him to be extremely overpowered. As a Sentinel player myself, I love the fact that he his damage output is insane for the amount of work you have to do (which is not much).

However, Sentinel is not perfect. Though you can’t deny his damage output, he also has holes in his game, which many players are starting to find every day. I actually get excited when I play against a Sentinel player, because in most cases, I can exploit Sentinel’s weaknesses with my own team. It also doesn’t hurt that the majority of Sentinel players I run into have no idea how to use him to his full potential, simply because they’re Sentinel bandwagon jumpers. I’m no pro at Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but here are some words of wisdom for how to beat the machine based on my own experience and information I’ve learned elsewhere.

To Buy or Not To Buy: Fight Night Champion

I like the Fight Night series. I thought Round 3 was great and Round 4 was even better. Well, it was better, until I ran into a game-breaking glitch that caused me to lose 20 hours of progress. When this happened to me, I returned the game with no remorse. I’ve had opportunities to buy it back for as low as $5 brand new, but I still couldn’t bring myself to do it. I loved that game, but I hate what it did to me.

With Fight Night Champion in stores now though, I’m torn.

Pick-Up Post: Jill and Shuma Gorath in Marvel vs Capcom 3

Though we’ve known about these characters for months (probably earlier than Capcom intended), Jill and Shuma Gorath are finally available as DLC on XBOX Live and PSN. At $5 each, they might be a bit pricey if you’re not interested in either character, but they’re available if you want them. I bought both of them mainly because I’ve been taking this game very seriously of late, and I’d like to get the full character experience out of it.

Having spent a bit of time with both characters in training mode and online, I thought it’d be cool to talk about my early impressions with them. I’m no expert at this game (and definitely not with these characters), but an amateur perspective may still be of value to you. If you’re considering picking these two up (or just want to read about the latest additions to the roster) check out the rest of this post.

The Team Mechanics of Marvel vs. Capcom 3

Over the past few weeks, I have grown rather fond of Marvel vs. Capcom 3. While I still play Super Street Fighter IV with my coworkers when they are online, Marvel has (for now) taken over as my go-to fighting game of choice.

What I’m enjoying most about the game is the team element of the experience. In other vs. games, I would choose my team simply based on who I liked and/or who I was good with. Once in battle, I wouldn’t pay any mind in regards to who my opponent’s team was, either. I was just looking to beat people up for the win. But now that I’ve actually taken some time to learn this game, I’m realizing that there’s so much more to the team-based gameplay than that if you want to go far with the game.

Out Now: The iPad 2

Today is a big day in the world of tech. The iPad 2 is out, and I’m sure that thousands of people are standing in a line somewhere, waiting to buy one as you read this. Though the iPad does a whole lot more than play games, I’m sure many people will buy one to play all their iPhone games, as well as to play Angry Birds in HD.

Early Impressions of de Blob 2

The revolution will be televised. Well, the colour revolution, anyway. The sequel to the highly-fun and possibly underrated Wii platformer is back; this time on the Wii, PlayStation 3 and XBOX 360. As a huge fan of the first game, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the sequel. Though I’m only on level 3 of a possible 11 (that I can see on the world map), I thought I’d share some thoughts on my experiences so far.

Happy 20th Birthday Street Fighter II

Has it really been 20 years? Apparently so. Street Fighter II is officially 20 years old this month, which is definitely something worth noting for gamers of all tastes and walks of life. Street Fighter II is one of those revolutionary games that changed the course of the entire medium. It birthed the fighting game genre as we still know it today. It’s control conventions and design choices originally set by Street Fighter are still used in fighting games and other genres. It revived the arcade scene. It defined a whole era of gaming. Most importantly, it’s legacy still carries on in the hearts of many a gamer that have thrown a hadoken in their lifetime.

Yours truly is one of those gamers that will forever have a soft spot for that game. Outside of owning three copies of this game (not including any updates like Champion Edition or Super), this game changed my life.
