10 Years of In Third Person: Growing Pains

2018 was a year of growth for In Third Person. From expanding to Twitch, to ramping up my social media presence, to connecting with friends old and new, to raising money for children in need as part of Extra Life, the In Third Person experience ballooned dramatically. Coming from a place where I created and maintained the blog for the nine previous years with no ambitions of reaching an audience beyond myself, it was definitely a shock to the system.

In fact, it’s a shock that I’m still reeling from well into 2019. Despite the many successes of last year, I can’t shake this sense of unease that has taken over me when thinking about what this passion project has become. After lots of introspection and a private conversation or two with others about this dilemma, I finally think I know the root issue.

enKo Products AV to HDMI Converter Review

With TV technology continually improving, it becomes increasingly difficult to play your old games. Many modern TVs simply don’t have the old RF or composite inputs anymore. While I still have a TV or two that does, I had no way of capturing that footage onto my computer.

After trying to use the composite functionality built into the Elgato Game Capture HD (which didn’t work for me initially), I stumbled across the option of converting a composite AV signal to HDMI. The marketplace is filled with no-name products that range wildly in price and performance, so getting one that was a right mix of both proved difficult. Eventually, I decided to go with the enKo Products AV to HDMI Converter. This proved to be a mistake.

Video Content Progress Report

It goes without saying that video is a wildly important part of any modern content mix and has been for years now. Will be the first to admit that I’ve been behind the curve in this regard. Though I’m a long ways away from my early days of recording my screen with a webcam, there’s still much work to be done in order to get my output to a place I’m happy with.

While we’re here, let’s list off what’s been done and what is still a work in progress.

My Hardware Roadmap For Better Video and Streaming

When it comes to producing video content, I’ve come a long way from pointing a webcam at my TV. I can output video in 720p HD, live stream, and produce video segments for shows like Board Game Talk. Hope you have enjoyed at least some of my output thus far.

While there’s still much for me to learn in terms of the things I can do to produce a better product that go beyond hardware, I can’t ignore my hardware deficiencies. As I’ve become slightly more proficient at this, I continue to run into the same or new challenges that either slow down my workflow or prevent me from executing on my ideas as originally intended.

Below is a list of things I would like to add to my repertoire someday. It won’t be cheap, and I certainly don’t have the money to add most of these items to my collection any time soon, but if I want to push this video thing as far as I can go, I should have the right tools for the job.
