Pick-Up Post: SoulCalibur for iOS

SoulCalibur for iOS is out now. While I am no good at any of the games in this series, I have picked up and enjoyed SoulCalibur II and IV in the past. I’ve been looking forward to this release even more so than SoulCalibur V on consoles because I’d personally get more out of an on-the-go SoulCalibur experience.

With that said, the price for the game is steep for an iOS game. Sure, the graphics look great in screenshots, has 19 characters and is a universal app that works on iPhone and iPad, but the ‘sale’ price of $11.99 is crazy steep. In a world where Street Fighter IV: Volt and King of Fighters i offer amazing fighting game experiences for as low as $0.99 when on sale, can SoulCalibur at a regular price of $14.99 hang? I have put the money up to find out on your behalf. Review coming soon!

Review: Candy Train

The makers of Peggle and Plants vs. Zombies are back! Sort of. From PopCap Games 4th and Battery division comes Candy Train, a universal app for the iPhone and iPad that is free as I type this. I’m not sure if that’s going to change by the time you read this. In any case, if you have either of those devices and the app is still free, you don’t need me to give you a review. Just go grab it already and come to your own conclusion. If you’d still like to hear what I’d think, then I’m not stopping you from reading my review, either.

Review: X-Men Arcade for iPhone and iPad

Hot on the heels of the release of X-Men: First Class comes the return of X-Men Arcade. Earlier this year, it made it’s return on XBOX Live and PlayStation Network, which I reviewed when it came out. This time, it’s out as a universal app for the iPhone and iPad. Though a lot of what I said about X-Men Arcade initially still stands for this port, the iOS version does have some perks and quirks worth noting in a separate review.

Top 5 In Third Person Posts: March 2011 Edition

March was a pretty big month for gaming. While the biggest news came from the North American release of the Nintendo 3DS, In Third Person talked almost exclusively about Marvel vs. Capcom 3. I’m sorry if the subject matter of my posts of late have been narrow, but I haven’t really been playing much else of late. Damn that game is good.

Based on the numbers, I’m not alone in my interest in Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Many of my Marvel vs. Capcom 3 posts got a lot of traffic, some of which found their way onto this list. If you’re interested in seeing what the readers found hot in March, click through the break!

Out Now: The iPad 2

Today is a big day in the world of tech. The iPad 2 is out, and I’m sure that thousands of people are standing in a line somewhere, waiting to buy one as you read this. Though the iPad does a whole lot more than play games, I’m sure many people will buy one to play all their iPhone games, as well as to play Angry Birds in HD.

Top 3 iPhone Games On Sale This Valentine’s Day

With a major holiday coming up, many iPhone game publishers are once again slashing the prices on a number of their games. Before writing this feature, I went nuts and bought a ton of games myself, many of which I will write about in the near future. If you’re looking to load up on iPhone games for yourself (or gift to a loved one) and don’t know where to start, I’d say start with my recommendations in this post.

Infinity Blade Review

Infinity Blade is a revelation. Built on Unreal Engine, this game pushes the graphical boundaries of the iPhone and iPad so far beyond what you think those devices are capable of that you may have a hard time believing that these visuals are coming from those devices. One could say it’s, unreal.

Sorry for the horrible joke. I don’t need to explain to anyone how amazing this game looks. But it is worth talking about how well it actually plays. Does the gameplay rival the graphics in awesomenss? Or is this a graphical showcase with no substance?

2010 Year in Review: My Favourite iOS Games

Whether you were playing games on an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, iOS gaming was really strong this year. There were a ton of great titles that hit the iTunes store, many of which went on sale at crazy prices. I have bought dozens of iOS games, though I’m embarrassed to admit that I did not put much time into most of them.

If you’re looking for a definitive list of the best iOS games of 2010, I’m sure that sites like Slide to Play and Touch Arcade will do a much better job of that than I ever could. At the very least, I can share with you my list of favourite iOS games of 2010.

Pick-Up Post: Infinity Blade

Infinity Blade (iTunes)

Infinity Blade has created quite the buzz for itself. Up until I read reviews about the game, I had absolutely no idea what it was about. However, I’ve known about it ever since it was debuted a few months ago. Up until now, I’ve known Infinity Blade as the graphically-stunning iOS game.

2010 Year in Review: The iPad as a Gaming Device

With Christmas rolling in quickly, I’m sure that the Apple iPad will continue to fly off the shelves as the hottest gadget on the market. Having owned one since launch, I can tell you that it’s a ‘nice to have’ device. It’s nice to have as a laptop or iPhone alternative, but if you already have both of those devices, this in-between gadget may not be for you.

Let’s narrow the scope of this discussion though, since this isn’t the place to talk about the device’s usefulness as a word processor or e-reader. How well has the iPad performed as a gaming device so far?
