Using a Headset Mic vs. A Standalone Mic for Streaming

When it comes to streaming equipment, I strongly vouch for starting with whatever you’ve got. If you’ve only got the mic built into your laptop, use that first. If you have a gaming headset, that works as well. Upgrades can wait until you spend some time streaming with your current gear and figuring out

But when you’re ready to upgrade, would it be better to get a standalone microphone? Or would a nicer gaming headset do the trick? Using my own gear, I put these options to the test!

My First Game(s) for Each Console

As November draws near, the hype for new consoles is hitting a fever pitch. I can’t wait to get my hands on my PlayStation 5 next month and experience the next generation of gaming.

All of this excitement got me thinking about my past experiences with new hardware. In particular, the games I got with each new toy. To the best of my memory, here’s

Among Us: The Hottest Game in the World is Quite the Handful to Play in an Ideal Setting

Though the game was first released in 2018, Among Us has really blown up in 2020. A sizable chunk of that credit goes to streamers who have help to spread the word about its existence. But beyond simply showcasing the game, they’ve also showcased the best (and most difficult) way to play. I get the sense that most players are having a considerably worse experience than their favourite streamers.

Create Your Own Tetris 99 or General Chat Countdown Timer with LioranBoard

As a regular Tetris 99 streamer who plays with viewers, it can be a real struggle for us to join the same lobby. With no game or system-level party system to speak of, players only hope of matching is to queue up at the exact same time. Simply counting down with your voice doesn’t work, as Twitch delay can be upwards of 20 seconds depending on which device the viewer is watching on.

Some players have suggested that I try managing the countdown with a bot. Recently, I saw a Tetris 99 streamer using a bot in action. Then I realized that I have the tech to make my own!

You can make your own too with the help of LioranBoard!

Unboxing the HyperX Cloud Alpha S Gaming Headset

Rest in peace to my old gaming headset. Held together with electrical tape, they’ve been on life support for some time. Once the left ear cup fell off and the sound stopped coming out of it, I knew it was time to let them go. Thank you for your service.

With the amount of time I used that headset for gaming and streaming, I figured now was a great time to upgrade to a higher-quality set. Thanks to Amazon Prime Day, I was able to get the HyperX Cloud Alpha S gaming headset. Let’s crack this box open!

Having Issues Streaming Retro Games With a 4:3 Aspect Ratio on Twitch? Try This Overlay Design Trick in OBS!

In a world where 16:9 is the norm, retro games created with the old 4:3 aspect ratio can be a pain to stream. Having to fit a square gameplay feed into a rectangle overlay leads to a lot of empty space, forcing streamers to create overlays specific to retro gaming.

One potential way to fill the extra space is to mirror the gameplay and blur the background. This effect is most commonly used when displaying vertically-shot videos on a widescreen display. Here’s how to implement this look on your stream!

What You Should Know About Soundtrack by Twitch

The subject of using licensed music on Twitch has been a messy one since the platform’s inception. Some streamers have been hit with DMCA strikes, countless videos have been muted for containing licensed music, and many other streamers seem to use licensed music with no punishment whatsoever.

In hopes of clearing the air for what’s allowed on their platform, Soundtrack by Twitch provides streamers with a curated library of Twitch-safe music.

While I applaud Twitch for attempting to address the confusing subject of music use, Soundtrack by Twitch is not a silver bullet solution for everyone. Here are some tidbits you should know before committing to this music platform.

Hate-Playing Super Mario Sunshine

Hate-watching as a concept is described as watching television or film while also hating its concept or subject. Even if you hate it, you’re still going out of your way to consume that content.

Let’s apply that same logic to games. Do you ever hate-play games? Years ago, I made a vow to myself that I wouldn’t spend any of my precious time playing games that I don’t like. Yet, here I am, cringing my teeth as I powered through Super Mario Sunshine as part Super Mario 3D All-Stars. Of all games, why this one?
