Kickstart Guide to Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid

Go! Go! Power Rangers!

Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid pits the legendary warriors in spandex in a 3v3 fighting game similar to Marvel vs. Capcom and Dragon Ball FighterZ. While its controls and gameplay systems have been simplified somewhat relative to other tag fighters on the market, you’re going to have to put in the elbow grease in order to access the most damaging combos, head-scratching mix-ups, and brick wall defense. This is by no means a comprehensive guide to the game, but here are a few pointers to get you ready for morphin’ time!

Join Me for Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid Tonight at 8:00pm EST

It’s (almost) Morphin’ Time! Join me tonight at 8:00pm EST for our first stab at Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid on the Nintendo Switch! I love tag-based fighting games, and this one has fighting game pros like Clockw0rk, Shady K, and Justin Wong as part of the development team! It might be a budget title, but I’m hoping it punches above its weight class!

Aspects of the Nintendo Labo VR Kit I’m Excited For

My initial experiences with Nintendo Labo have been mixed. Granted, will acknowledge that I’m not the target audience for these products. However, based on my time with the Toy-Con 01 Variety Kit, it was more fun to build the toys than it was to actually play them. Right now, they’re all stacked on top of my desk and I have no idea what to do with them. Still have Toy-Con 02 Robot Kit in the box, but my wife and I do have plans of building that one someday. Have heard that Toy-Con 03 Vehicle Kit did a better job of providing kids with a meatier gameplay experience, but I don’t have that kit yet.

Nevertheless, Nintendo isn’t waiting for me to catch up. The upcoming Toy-Con 04 VR Kit is set to be released on April 12th. While I do have some concerns with some of these toys being as gimmicky as those found in the Variety Kit (I’m looking at you, bird and wind pedal), there are aspects of this package that really excite me.

Video Games? Why Would I Play Those?

Though I’ve managed to keep the daily post streak going, there hasn’t been much for me to write about in terms of new gaming reviews and impressions. Let’s talk about that for a moment.

Warming Up to Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid

The bar for fighting games in modern times is higher than ever.  From AAA efforts like Street Fighter V, Tekken 7, and Mortal Kombat 11, to indie titles like Skullgirls and Pocket Rumble, the genre is now packed with games that are built with smart combat mechanics, accessibility, depth, balance, and tournament viability in mind. Even licensed games like Dragon Ball FighterZ headlined the EVO main stage while outselling previous Dragon Ball fighting games by making a title that appealed to both fans of the show and the hardcore tournament crowd.

Though I’ve had my concerns about the upcoming Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid due to it being a licensed game and featuring mediocre graphics, the fact that Justin Wong was working on the game as a balance consultant gave me hope that this might not be a cash grab. After watching the game’s first live stream, I have more hope that this will reach the standard set by other competitive fighting games on the market.

What I Want to See in an ARMS Sequel

Having sold over two million copies and ranking as the 8th most played game on the Nintendo Switch in 2017, the odds of the ARMS franchise returning in some form are pretty high. While we may not see a sequel for quite some time based on Nintendo’s track record of generally releasing only one game of each franchise on a platform, here’s a few things I would want to see in a successor to ARMS!

Wargroove Impressions

[NOTE: Based on backlog and life circumstances, I don’t think I’m going to finish the Wargroove campaign any time soon. As such, this is an impressions piece based on my time with it instead of a formal review.]

“If you want a new Advance Wars so much, why don’t you make it yourself?”
– Nintendo, probably

With Nintendo’s military strategy game still on ice a decade after we last saw it, Chucklefish steps up to this hypothetical challenge with Wargroove. Take the Advance Wars gameplay, set it in a Fire Emblem like medieval setting, and watch the profits roll in. But does it offer anything more than just a repackaging of tried-and-true ideas?

Daemon X Machina: Prototype Missions Impressions

First making its debut at E3 2018 as part of Nintendo’s E3 presentation, we now have the opportunity to try out Daemon X Machina for ourselves thanks to a demo on the eShop. Having never really played Armored Core or any other mech game for that matter, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. By the end of the hour-ish demo, I got a pretty good sense of what this game was about and whether this was something I’d interested in picking up someday.
