Off-Topic: Tonight I’m Watching the Throne

My girlfriend Steff and her sister are the best. Over the weekend, they surprised their boyfriends with tickets for them to see Watch the Throne live as early Christmas presents. As a huge fan of Jay-Z and Kanye West, I’m pumped to see them live for the first time. How I’m going to return the favour is beyond me.

For now though, I’ll just enjoy the concert, which is tonight. Anyone else going to tonight’s show, have tickets for a future show or went to a tour stop in the past? Any Jay-Z or Kanye fans here by any chance? Let’s discuss in the comments!

Uncharted 3 Single Player Review

Back in 2009, Uncharted 2 was a groundbreaking game. When I think about that game in retrospect, I think fondly about the great characters, the great story and those incredible setpieces. I still get the chills thinking about playing through that moment in the collapsing building and the train sequence. It wasn’t a perfect game, but it was definitely ahead of it’s time. Even in 2011, there isn’t really another game out there like it.

Well, there wasn’t anything like it until the release of Uncharted 3 a few weeks ago. For better or worse, Uncharted 3 is essentially more Uncharted 2 and not much beyond that. That can’t be a bad thing, can it?

Universal Fighting Game Guide: The Don’ts (and Do’s) of Flowcharting

flowchartken

Poor Ken Masters. As a character, his capabilities are fairly standard issue. However, the sight of Ken is enough to induce a groan from even the most casual Street Fighter fans. It has nothing to do with the character himself, but rather the player using him. There’s a good reason why the term “Flowchart Ken” exists.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Review

It’s (Ultimate) Marvel baby!

Having been in the market for a mere 9 months, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 has died an (arguably) premature death. In its place is Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, which is a stand-alone, disc-only and $40 release that aims to expand and refine the original formula. While the hardcore Marvel vs. Capcom 3 community have been chomping at the bit to get this more fully-realized version of the original vision, does this game appeal to the majority of the fighting game playing populous, especially if you just bought its predecessor 9 months ago?

Wallet Am Cry – Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 are Out Today

It’s days like today when I sometimes wish I had taken up a cheaper hobby. As excited as I am to get my hands on both Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, it’s not easy for the average person to fit multiple new game purchases on the same day into their budget. Easing the pain a bit is the fact that Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is coming out at a ‘discount’ price of $39.99, but I’m still looking at dropping $100 on two games in the next few days to sustain my video game addiction interest.

Anyone else besides me picking these up this week?

To Review or Not Review Video Games…

…that is the question.

I like to think to myself that I write this blog for me first. I turn to this blog whenever I have a gaming thought I think is worth writing down and I make it happen. It’s a very therapeutic process for me. However, I also love to look at my analytics to see what does well and what doesn’t. Posts about fightsticks? Money in the bank. Posts about sexy video game characters? They never go out of style. Video game reviews? The numbers aren’t pretty.

Size Matters: My Current Perspective on Long Games

As I write this, I’m looking at my shelf of games. Three of those games include Fallout 3, Elder Scrolls: Oblivion and Dragon Age: Origins. Two of those games I received as gifts, while the third I picked up for cheap. I’ve had these games for almost a year now, yet I haven’t played any of them. In fact, you could almost say I’m actively avoiding them. What gives?

My Recent Experiences Playing Arcade Fighting Games

Fighting games may have their roots in the arcade, but I almost never play fighting games on an arcade machine. In my part of the world, the arcade scene is very much dead. Within a 60km radius from downtown, I can think of only five actual arcades in existence. There are also movie theatres that have a handful of arcade games, but the vast majority of them don’t have fighting games.

With that said, I was caught off guard the other day when Steff and I went out to see The Ides of March. The movie theatre we went to had a Street Fighter IV machine and a Marvel vs. Capcom 2 machine. I was pretty excited to play both of these games as they were originally designed to be played, but disappointment set in rather quickly when I got my hands on the controls.

Pick-Up Post: Uncharted 3

Yesterday, I picked up my copy of Uncharted 3, the biggest PlayStation 3 exclusive title this year. I have not had a chance to play it yet, but for sure I will be zoning out and playing a bunch of it today. As a huge fan of Uncharted 2, I can’t wait to jump back into the shoes of Nathan Drake and take on whatever may come my way.

Of course, a review will be on the way once I’ve played enough of it. For the time being, feel free to check out all of the other great content on In Third Person, or leave me a comment about Uncharted 3 or whatever you may feel like talking about.

Canada Cup 2011 Fighting Game Tournament Starts Today!

Starting today, the Canada Cup 2011 fighting game tournament takes place in Calgary, Alberta. For you Calgary-based In Third Person readers who will be attending this event, or out-of-towners traveling in for this, I hope you have a blast. For us stream monsters, you can watch the stream for free here, or for $8.99, watch the stream ad-free in HD.

What makes this particular major fighting game tournament stand out from the rest is the inclusion of an international 5-on-5 team tournament, featuring 8 teams filled with top players from around the world. Credit where credit is due, it was my girlfriend Steff who first told me about the 5-on-5. With that tidbit of info, I would shortly forget it, find out about it again in the news, then tell Steff about the 5-on-5 as if she didn’t already tell me this. Whoops. In spite of my blunder, Steff is genuinely interested in watching the 5-on-5 tournament with me, which is super cool.
