2010 Year in Review: Older Games That Rocked My Socks

When it comes to playing video games, the majority of gamers don’t just play whatever is new and hot. Most of us will play some new releases, but we’ll also go back to older games we may have missed for whatever reason. In hindsight, most of the games I played this year were were not originally released in 2010. If I were to make some sort of defining list of the best games of 2010, it would fall well short of representing the year’s best, as I spent much of the year playing older stuff.

Instead, I present to you this list of awesome, older games that I only got to this year. You may have already played this stuff, but if you haven’t, they’re all worth a look.

Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood 1.03 Patch Does Not Fix Game-Breaking Glitch

A few days ago, Ubisoft released the 1.03 patch for Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood on the PlayStation 3. I’m assuming that this patch was also released to XBOX 360 players. If you were a victim of the Animus glitch like me, and you were hoping that the next update would fix it, I’ve got some bad news for you.

Kratos is Playable in Mortal Kombat 9 as a PlayStation 3 Exclusive

Kratos is set to appear as a playable character in the PlayStation 3 version of Mortal Kombat 9. Stickskills.com reported late last night that this will be confirmed in the January issue of Game Informer, which is set to hit newsstands later this week.

Pick-Up Post: Blur

Picking up Blur at this point in the game’s life-cycle seems like an odd choice. For one, it’s roughly 7 months old. Two, Gran Turismo 5 is out, which is a much higher-profile racing game. Three, despite its critical acclaim and heavy marketing push, it bombed at retail, which prompted Activision to drop Bizarre Creations.

None of that matters to me. I want to play this game.

Girlfriend Gaming – The Co-op Adventures of 50 Cent and Tony Yayo

As I watched my girlfriend shoot up dozens of terrorists in 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand, I longed to join in on the fun. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t feature local co-op, which is par for the course for this style of game. Instead, I picked up my own copy and we recently had the opportunity to play online co-op together. Without spoiling anything (as if anyone cares about the ‘amazing’ story contained in this game) we started playing at the point just before you fight a helicopter, and ended our session just after we shot down the third helicopter. Yes, that plays out as ridiculous as it sounds.

An Open Letter to Santa

Dear Santa,

Let’s cut to the chase. You know I’ve been a good boy and you’re a generous guy. You know you want to leave me something nice under the Christmas tree, but I’m a terrible person to get gifts for. I have a bad habit of purchasing everything I want before anyone has a chance to give it to me.

Early Impressions of Plants vs. Zombies on XBOX 360

Having first played Plants vs. Zombies on the iPad, I had no doubts going into the XBOX 360 version that this was going to be a good game. However, I did have a few concerns about how the game was going to control. The game lends itself perfectly to touch screen controls, which just isn’t an option on the XBOX 360.

I was also curious about the multiplayer aspects that PopCap Games incorporated into the title. Would multiplayer just be tacked-on or actually add something meaningful to the mix? My brother and I played through a quarter of the game recently to find out.

Currently No Fix in Sight For Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood Game-Breaking Glitch

A few weeks have passed since I encountered a game-breaking glitch in Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood. My write-up about my experience has been very popular over the last few weeks, presumably because I’m not the only one who has encountered this issue.

Despite our efforts to raise this issue to Ubisoft, I’m starting to get the feeling that a fix isn’t coming anytime soon.

Girlfriend Gaming – She Plays 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand

My girlfriend wasted no time in building up her PlayStation 3 game catalogue. After just 24 hours of buying the console, she had already obtained six games. Her system came bundled with NHL 11 and Infamous. She then went out and bought Batman: Arkham Asylum, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Bioshock and most curiously, 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand. When she sat down in front of her new PS3 and chose what game to play first, the choice was clear to her. It did not involve hockey, super powers, caped crusaders, plasmids or Snake Eyes. Instead, she christened her PS3 with desert cities, a non-Indiana-Jones crystal skull and Tony Yayo.

Pick-Up Post: Plants vs. Zombies for XBOX 360

Did you know that Plants vs. Zombies existed as a boxed retail game for the XBOX 360? I had no idea. I knew it existed as an XBOX Live Arcade downloadable game, but not packaged like this, alongside of Peggle and Zuma. I stumbled upon this over the weekend while video game shopping with my girlfriend and couldn’t let it go.
