Super Punch-Out!! and When Great Isn’t Great Enough

The night before every stream, I do a technical check. Firing up all of my equipment, I ensure that everything is functioning as intended and that the audio mix between my mic and the game. After configuring everything for Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, I revisited an old fave: Super Punch-Out!!.

At the time of its release, I adored this game. Beat it many times over back in the day, and couldn’t put it down on this day until I sent the final boss down to the canvas. Much of my muscle memory was still intact, as I finished the campaign with a record of 16-2.

In large part, Super Punch-Out!! is still a great game and worthy of your time. Personally, I think it’s better than Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! – its predecessor that has reached mythical status in the gaming community. Even so, it quickly got lost in the shuffle at the time of its release and it’s nonexistent in the greater conversation of gaming. What happened? Continue reading

Carcassonne on Nintendo Switch Review

Simple to learn, difficult to master, and providing a unique challenge every time, Carcassonne is a tabletop gaming classic. It’s no stranger to the world of video games either, as it’s made some fantastic appearances on mobile and the Xbox 360.

It goes without question then that the much newer Nintendo Switch version should provide a better experience then, or at least one comparable to those older iterations. Right?

…right?

Calling Haley on My Simp Phone! – Stardew Valley Let’s Play Live Stream Part 2

I bought a voice changer mostly to sound like Auto-Tune when I thank people. Instead, it takes on a life of its own when I use it with Stardew Valley! Why does the wizard sound like T-Pain? And even though Haley has voiced her disinterest in me, I can’t stop leaving her voicemails through my Simp Phone (TM)!

Envisioning Overwatch Characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: Tracer, Doomfist, D. Va, and Ashe

The creators of Overwatch want their characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. For a fighting game franchise built around assembling the biggest and brightest stars in gaming, they’re a fantastic fit! Also, with Blizzard’s hero shooter out on the Nintendo Switch and a second season of DLC characters slated for Ultimate, the crossover isn’t entirely out of the realm of possibility.

That being said, Nintendo would be tasked with translating characters designed for a first-person shooter into a 2D platform fighter. I may not have a shred of Sakurai’s design talent, but I’m gonna try to make these characters work anyway! Not sure if this will be an ongoing series, but let’s start things off with Tracer, Doomfist, D. Va, and Ashe!

I Finally Played Metal Gear Solid for the First Time

Widely considered to be one of the best and most influential games of all-time, Metal Gear Solid is a game I’ve been actively dodging for most of my life. Part of that stems from an anti-Sony bias that formed in the 90s that I’ve since shedded. Part of it came from being a stealth game. I hate stealth games with a passion (with one beautiful exception). Even when I bought a copy of the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection for under $10, I ended up selling it later on without ever playing it.

At long last, during a random PlayStation Classic stream, I did the thing. By the end of it, I wasn’t quite sure of what to do with this newfound knowledge.

Treasure Stack Review

Remember Wario’s Woods? No? I don’t blame you. Released as the final officially-licensed NES game in 1994 (and released on the SNES later that year), this puzzle game felt like it got lost in the shuffle even at the time. Despite being a fan of Nintendo games and puzzle games, this one slipped through my fingers for reasons that elude me.

Not to say that it’s bad. Its core gameplay concept is actually rather interesting. Instead of taking direct control of the pieces as they fall down the well, you controlled a character inside the well who had to pick up, move, and drop the pieces in order to create sets and clear blocks. Haven’t really seen any games try that concept since.

Decades later, Treasure Stacker by indie studio PIXELAKES builds on the concept. Does this modern take prove that gaming shouldn’t have abandoned the idea when it did?
