How Matt Fraction and David Aja Made Hawkeye Cool

Over the course of Hawkeye’s 50+ years of existence, he’s probably had some high points in terms of his popularity and importance to the comic book universe. With my limited comic knowledge, I can’t say for certain what those points were or if they ever really happened. To me, Hawkeye was the purple Robin Hood-like guy in the Spider-Man arcade game, and who would choose Hawkeye in a game where you could play as Spider-Man? Many years later, he was mostly just a guy in the background of the Avengers movie. Maybe I’ve been looking at him the wrong way, or others who haven’t framed him in the right context, but based on the first 11 issues of Hawkeye as depicted by Matt Fraction and David Aja, I think they’ve got it.

Pandemic for iOS Review

Pandemic

PandemicĀ on iOS is a direct adaptation of the board game with the same name. In it, players must work together to contain and cure four deadly viruses before they ravage the world. As daunting as it sounds, this is one of my favourite board games thanks to how tense the action always is and how it requires players to work as a team versus competing against one another.

I know the game has been available on iPad for quite some time. However, I do most of my digital board gaming on my iPhone, so a purchase on iPad wouldn’t be worth it for me. That is, until recently, when the app was finally updated with iPhone support. Now that I have it, is this a worth port of a fantastic board game?

Amiibo Story: Sonic

Sonic AmiiboIt’s easy to make fun of Sonic the Hedgehog. For the last 15 or so years, the games he’s starred in have been mediocre at best to dumpster fires at worst. His glory days may be long behind him, but I’ll never forget the time when he was the king of video games.

Board Gaming on Mobile Devices

Carcassonne

I fell out of love with mobile gaming ages ago. What once was a platform full of potential has degraded into a free-to-play money grab for the likes of Farmville, Candy Crush Saga and Clash of Clans. For those of you that like those kinds of games, that’s great. However, the types of games and the business models that drive them no longer appeal to my gaming sensibilities. At this point, my final vestige of mobile gaming comes from digital adaptations of analog board games.

Time to Suit Up: Raptors vs. Wizards in the 2015 NBA Playoffs

It’s been a season filled with highs and lows for the Toronto Raptors and their fans (me). Regardless of how rocky they were towards the back half of the year, the Raptors make their return to the playoffs to square off against the Washington Wizards in round 1. I know that the Raps have fared very well against the Wiz over the last few years, though I’m not ready to count out all-star point guard John Wall and grizzled veteran Paul Pierce just yet.

Steff and I were lucky enough to snag tickets for game 1, so we’ll be cheering our lungs out at the Air Canada Centre today. For the rest of the playoffs, we’ll probably still be cheering our lungs out, either from home or with the thousands congregating at “Jurassic Park” in front of the arena. Regardless of who you’re cheering for, I hope you enjoy this year’s NBA playoffs!

Also, let’s go Raptors!

Time for Spider-Gwen and Silk to Shine

Around this time last year, comic fans were anxiously awaiting the triumphant return of Peter Parker as Spider-Man. He’s been on a hiatus of sorts, as Doctor Octopus had taken control of his body for a few years thanks to a heinous mind swap. With Peter back in control, we wondered how he’d cope with all of the changes that Doc Ock made to his life.

Roughly one year and one potentially-cataclysmic Spider-Verse run later, Peter Parker is once again pushed out of the spotlight. This time, it’s by Spider-Gwen and Silk; two new characters introduced during Peter’s return.

Dead of Winter Added to the List of Awesome Board Games You Should Play

Dead of Winter is an insanely popular game in my neck of the woods. Retailers here make big announcements every time it’s in stock, only for the game to sell out minutes later. I was lucky enough to snag one online at 2am a little while ago and have been loving the game since.

This is basically the best Walking Dead board game out there. It captures so much of the action, drama and intrigue that make the show great in a game that is always fun and exciting to play. In particular, players who love games with stories or themes are really going to get a kick out of this one. Games aren’t guaranteed to stay on my awesome list forever, though I don’t this one leaving any time soon. Congratulations Dead of Winter!

Amiibo Story: Sheik

Sheik AmiiboDue to a lack of foresight, I kind of already said everything I wanted to about Sheik in my Zelda Amiibo Story post from a gameplay perspective. Because of that, let’s just skip to the shopping experience and what I think about this particular figurine.

Legendary: Guardians of the Galaxy Review

Marvel’s ragtag group of intergalactic heroes finally make their presence feltĀ  in Legendary: Guardians of the Galaxy. Inside this small box expansion, you’ll get the five protagonists from the movie, two new villain groups, two new masterminds, and the introduction of the most dramatically new gameplay mechanics since the game’s inception. They may be the stars of 2014’s biggest movie, but can they also hold their weight as an expansion for Marvel’s deck-building game?
