Girlfriend Gaming: Help Me Recommend PS3 Games

My girlfriend is a life-long PlayStation fan. Way before I entered her life, she grew up playing Crash Team Racing on her PlayStation One. She’s since picked up a SNES and a Wii, but she’s had her eye on a PlayStation 3 for a long time now. At the very least, she’s wanted one long before I ever started thinking about it.

She feels like now is the right time to take the plunge and pick up a PS3. She’s asked for my help in recommending games for her to try, but my PS3 knowledge isn’t that great compared to what I know about the other systems. This is why I’m enlisting you for help. What should she buy or try out on the PS3?

Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood is Out Today

While everyone dropped their bones on a copy of Call of Duty: Black Ops last week, I was saving up my pennies for today. Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood is out now, and I am hyped to jump back into Italy, get back in touch with Leonardo Da Vinci and stab more dudes in the face with my spring-action wrist blades.

Review for Scott Pilgim vs. The World: The Game

Timed coincidently with the DVD release of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, the price of the downloadable game was slashed by 50% on XBOX Live. By the time you’re reading this, you’re too late to take advantage of the deal, but I was quick enough to snag it.

Whether you pick it up for 400 or 800 Microsoft points, you’re getting a pretty good beat ’em up.  That is, if you’re still looking to play this style of game (and are willing to put up with some annoying quirks).

The Canada Cup Begins Today

These last few weeks have been awesome for followers and players in the pro fighting game scene. We had Season’s Beatings a few weeks ago, SoCal Regionals and South Florida Challenge just last week and NorCal Regionals coming up next week. All of these events have (and will) feature the best fighting game talent from around the world, which has led to some amazing matches (and antics) for us to see.

Happening any minute now is the Canada Cup, which as far as I know, is the first major Canadian fighting game tournament. This one should be as big and entertaining as everything else the fighting game community has been spoiled with of late.

Viacom to Sell Harmonix

While I’m by no means a life-long Harmonix fan, I’ve loved them ever since they rocked my world with Guitar Hero II. They’ve consistently made quality music games and supported them with great downloadable content, which puts them head and shoulders above anybody else in the music/rhythm genre. As far as downloadable content goes, no game ever has had better support than the Rock Band franchise. I have easily spent hundreds of hours (and dollars) on their products, and don’t regret any of it.

It looks like my money wasn’t enough to keep their operation going. Viacom, parent company of MTV and Harmonix, has announced that they’re going to sell off the creators of Rock Band and Dance Central.

The Most Epic Street Fighter Win

Taunting has been part of fighting games since the dawn of Street Fighter II. Hate it or love it, someone out there is talking trash to the person they’re playing against, hitting the taunt command just before finishing them off or sending others bitter messages over XBOX Live or PSN. In the right context, I think there’s absolutely a place in the scene for taunting, whether that be to mentally guard break your opponent or as a means of celebration. A lot of people do it the wrong way, which gives taunting a bad name, but when done right, I’m all for it.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game is the XBOX LIve Deal of the Week

Last time I wrote about this game, I was debating to myself whether or not I wanted to drop $10 on it. Based on what I had played from the demo, I enjoyed what was there, but I wasn’t sure if there was enough to justify my $10. Yes, I understand that in the grand scheme of gaming (console gaming in particular), $10 isn’t that much. However, I want a certain level of value out of my games and $10 for that particular package didn’t add up to me.

None of that matters now, at least for this week.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Glitch

As of right now, Call of Duty: Black Ops is officially a thing. Did you go to a midnight launch to get your copy? Did you get one in advance? Is it any good? I’m most intrigued about the latter. As much as I like Modern Warfare 1 and 2, I’m avoiding anything made by Treyarch until they prove to me that they can make a game that doesn’t suck.

In the meantime, I’ll be keeping an eye out on any coverage that may sway my opinion. The following glitch isn’t helping me change my mind.

Cool Moment From Rock Band 3

Over the weekend, I watched my brother playing “Rock Lobster” on hard pro keys. He took piano lessons many years ago, but hasn’t played piano seriously in a very long time. Part of his desire to get Rock Band 3 was to use it to get back into piano and as a means of extending his learning.

Before he finished the song, I left. A few minutes later though, I heard (and then saw) something very cool that probably wouldn’t have happened without Rock Band 3.
