Uncharted 2 Single Player Mode Review

For the first few sections of the game, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves made me wonder what all the hype was about. The game starts out with a stealth sequence that I didn’t find very fun to play, followed by a pass through a jungle, which was 95% of the original game. I had high hopes for Uncharted 2 surpassing the good but flawed original, but things did not start off on the right foot for me.

But then you’re running through a city with an armored vehicle trailing close behind you. Then you’re running away from a helicopter. Then you have to escape a collapsing building. From that point on, Uncharted 2 was pretty awesome.

Pick Up Post – James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game

Rounding out the gaming-related presents I received this Christmas was Avatar: The Game. I received it as a present from my girlfriend’s family, which I truly appreciate.  I enjoyed the movie quite a bit. As for the game? I don’t actually know anything about it.

Pick Up Post: Fallout 3

For a game I’ve never played before, I know quite a bit about Fallout 3. I know that it’s a first-person RPG made by the same guys who did Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. I also know a bunch of weird story details, which I’ve heard through a few of my close friends, who love this game to death. They’ve always tried to talk me into playing the game, but for one reason or another, I’ve passed on it.

Closing Thoughts on Donkey Kong Country Returns

After wrapping up Donkey Kong Country Returns, many of my original sentiments still rang true. It’s still a great game that surpasses the scope and quality of the original by leaps and bounds. The only real flag I need to wave here is that it gets really difficult.

Top 5 In Third Person Posts: January 2011 Edition

The late 2010 success of In Third Person continued into the new year. While my blog will never reach the heights of an IGN or Kotaku, In Third Person has grown from a site with a few dozen visitors a month to a few thousand, which is really damn good for a pet project I do in my spare time. If you keep visiting, I’ll keep writing!

January’s top posts are an interesting bunch. I don’t think any of these posts appeared the last time I wrote one of these top 5 wrap-ups. If you’d like to check out the most popular posts of January, read on!

Jett vs. BLACKHAWKxDOWN in Super Street Fighter IV

Hardcore followers of the Street Fighter IV community have no doubt seen this video. This is the clip that put DarkSydePhil on the map as a voice in the community, and also the video that exposed XBOX Live user BLACKHAWKxDOWN for his flowchart style and his dubious manipulation of the rules to his advantage.

To my surprise, I found BLACKHAWKxDOWN on XBOX Live yesterday, who was hosting ranked matches on his end. I joined his lobby and his signature Ken faced off against my Rose. Was I able to do what DarkSydePhil didn’t do on that fateful day?

NHL 2K11 for iPhone Review

NHL 94 is one of my all-time favourite sports video games. I have fond memories of playing this game for dozens of hours with friends. Many years later, when I got a Super Nintendo again, I made sure to pick up a copy of NHL 94, which to me, still holds up as a fun game to play. I understand that video game hockey has progressed greatly in the last 15 years, but as a non-hockey fan (and as someone who hasn’t played a hockey game since then…yet), that game is still good enough for me.

I was sold on NHL 2K11 on the iPhone when I played the lite version. Almost instantly, I realized that it played a lot like NHL 94. After a few minutes with the demo, I shelled out the $0.99 for it and have been playing it since.

Heavy Rain Movie Being Made

I’m normally not one to get excited about video game movies, because they’re basically all terrible. But if any video game had a shot at being a good movie, I think Heavy Rain is that game. According to Variety, who broke the news,Warner is going to be the one taking that shot. They’ve hired on David Milch, Bob Shaye and Michael Lynn to produce the film. For whatever reason, they’re also dropping the word ‘heavy’ from the title, as the film will simply be called “Rain”.

Let’s Talk About the Sony NGP (or PSP2)

After months (if not years) of speculation, Sony has revealed the successor to the PSP. It’s currently called the NGP, though I think it’s silly that they didn’t just call it the PSP2 out of the gate. If you’re looking for nitty gritty hardware specs or a listing of upcoming games, there are other outlets that will do a much better job of covering that type of stuff than I ever will. In short, it’s roughly as powerful as a PS3. It has two analog sticks, a touch screen and a rear touch pad. It also has an Uncharted game coming out for it.

If you’re already up on the latest NGP news though, let’s talk about it.

Girlfriend Gaming – We Play Def Jam: Icon

The last time Steff and I played a rap-music-related game, we were caught by surprise. I figured that 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand at best would be ironic fun, but it turned out to be a fairly solid game. Steff, who isn’t into shooters at all, really got into it. It was good enough that I went out and picked up my own copy so that we could play co-op.

When she saw Def Jam: Icon at the store, she was hoping that it would be the fighting game equivalent to Blood on the Sand. Instead, the game broke her heart after the very first fight. In her words, the game was, “Utter disappointment.”
